Dawna Concannon

I am a trained and fully qualified Holistic Psychotherapist and a member of IACP.

I underwent my training with ICPPD (International College of Personal and Professional Development) and achieved graduate Higher Diploma in Holistic Psychotherapy. I hold post grad certification in Child & Adolescent Counselling awarded by IICP College, Dublin, Play Skills certification with CTC, Mullingar, (Children’s Therapy Centre) and Post grad certification in CBT & Mindfulness for Children & Adolescents awarded by Mindfulness Institute, Merrion Square, Dublin. Other training includes – Children’s First Training, CLIMB Facilitator (Workshops for children up to 12 years dealing with family member’s diagnosis of Cancer), Drug and Alcohol Awareness. I am committed to person centred, non-judgemental therapy. I tend to work with which ever method resonates with the client.  I find that children and adolescents like to have what I call “their toolbox” so as they can reach into it and pull out a way of dealing with whatever situation they find themselves in.  I continue to source methods by which my clients can express their feelings, whether by sand-play therapy, mindfulness, visualisation, storytelling or art.

I offer a respectful, safe, honest and confidential space for the young person. I meet them and help them explore their feelings, emotions and behaviours and implement effective strategies to help them cope with the challenges of growing up and finding their place within their family, their social circles, and society at large.

Breathe Easy Counselling also offers counselling for children (5-12)

Sometimes children aged 5 to 12 may need extra support outside of school if they are finding it difficult to deal with their emotions and behaviours. Children’s counselling differs from adult and adolescent counselling as the child’s age and cognitive abilities affect their understanding of what is going on around them. I am qualified and experienced in dealing with this age group to support and enable them to express their emotions and help them cope better with the emotions, feelings or behaviours that are upsetting them.

With children the spoken work is often too difficult for them to express so I use many forms of therapy to help them tell their story. Play and art are mediums I find have excellent results for example allowing them to tell their story through sand trays, figurines, through art and storytelling and playing with toys. These often give an accurate insight into how the child sees themselves and others around them. It also allows them the opportunity and safe environment where they can express their fears or anxieties without having to verbalise them.
